BIO

Erik Kessels is a Dutch communication designer, artist and curator with great interest in photography. Erik Kessels is since 1996 Creative Partner of communications agency KesselsKramer in Amsterdam/London and has created campaigns for national and international clients such as Nike, Diesel, J&B Whisky, Oxfam, Ben, Vitra, Citizen M, I amsterdam and The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel. Kessels has won many international awards with his advertising work.

As an artist and curator Kessels has published over 70 books of his 're-appropriated' images: Missing Links (1999), The Instant Men (2000), in almost every picture (2001-2019) and Shit (2018). Since 2000, he has been an editor of the alternative photography magazine Useful Photography and has written the international bestseller Failed It!

Kessels writes regular editorials for numerous international magazines and has taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam), Écal (Lausanne), Raffles (Milan) and at the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture where he curated a celebration of amateurism.

Kessels made and curated exhibitions such as Loving Your Pictures, Mother Nature, 24HRS in Photos, Album Beauty, Unfinished Father and GroupShow. He als co-curated an exhibition called From Here on together with Martin Parr.

In 2010 Kessels was awarded with the Amsterdam Prize of the Arts, in 2016 nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Until 2019 his mid-career retrospective was shown in Turin, Düsseldorf, Budapest and he exhibited this year in the SFMOMA. He was called “a visual sorcerer” by Time Magazine and a “Modern Anthropologist” by Voque (Italia).

ABOUT WHAT?

Make more sense with nonsense

This talk is nonsense. It will be a celebration of everything illogical, imperfect, implausible, incongruous, incorrect, irrational and insane. Current trends in creativity champion perfection over substance, I will argue that true beauty is in the imperfections, the accidents and the mishaps. Uniformity and repetition are boring. True beauty cannot be forced or contrived; brilliance and beauty are born out of spontaneity, instinct and daring. There have never been more forms or means of creativity and yet, we’re surrounded by repetition; same shit, different color over and over again. We seem to have forgotten that there is a difference between inspiration and imitation. It is human nature to try and blend in with the herd, it’s safer there. When we create to blend in the results are mediocre and forgettable. No one ever made a breakthrough by following the rules. I will argue that bad is good, symmetry is overrated, and embarrassment is the path to creative enlightenment.

Erik Kessels yra iš Olandijos kilęs komunikacijų dizaineris, menininkas bei kuratorius, ypatingai gasėjantis savo atsidavimu fotografijai. Nuo 1966-ųjų legendinės komunikacijos agentūros „KesselsKramer”, veikiančios Amsterdame ir Niujorke kūrybinis partneris, su kuria jis sukūrė kampanijas vietiniams ir tarptautiniams gigantams, tarp jų ir „Nike“, „Diesel“, „J&B Whisky“, „Oxfam“, „Ben“, „Vitra“, „Citizen M“, „I Amsterdam“ and „The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel“. Erikas už savo kurtas reklamas laimėjo krūvą tarptautinių apdovanojimų.

Ne ką įspūdingesni Eriko Kesselio rezultatai meno ir kuravimo srityje – vyras išleido virš 70-ies savo perskirstytų fotografijų albumų: „Missing Links” (1999m.), „ The Instant Men“ (2000), „In almost every picture“ (2001-2019) ir „Shit“ (2018). E.Kesselis nuolat rašo daugeliui tarptautinių žurnalų, dėstė Amsterdamo Gerrit Rietveld akademijoje, Lozano „Ecal”, Milano „Raffles institutuose bei Amsterdamo architektūros akademijoje, kur kuravo ir skatino amateurizmo (megėjiškumo) šlovinimą. Vyras surengė ir kuravo daugybę parodų. Keletas jų – „ Mylėti savo nuotraukas “ (Loving Your Pictures), „ Motulė gamta“ (Mother Nature) , „24 valandos nuotraukose “ (24HRS in Photos), „Grožio albumas “ (Album Beauty), „ Nebaigtas tėvas “ (Unfinished Father) ir „ grupinis pasirodymas “ (GroupShow). Vyras taip pat kartu su garsiuoju Didžiosios Britanijos fotografu Martinu Parr kuravo parodą „Nuo čia tik kartu“ (From Here on together).

2010-aisiais Kesselis apdovanotas Amsterdamo meno prizu, 2016-aisiais nominuotas „Deutsche Börse“ fotografijos apdovanojimuose. Iki 2019-ųjų jo vidurio karjeros retrospektyva eksponuota Turine, Diuseldorfe ir Budapešte, o šiais metais jo darbai eksponuoti ir San Francisko modernaus meno muziejuje. „Time” žurnalas jį įvardija kaip vaizdų burtininką, o itališkasis „Vogue“ Kesselį praminė moderniuoju antropologu.

APIE KĄ?

Kesselio kalbos pristatymas palieka milžinišką intrigą. Jo paties žodžiais: „Mano pranešimas – tikra nesąmonė. Kviečiu jus kartu šlovinti viską, kas nelogiška, netobula, nenusakoma, neracionalu, nenuspėjama – visa tai, kas yra paprasčiausiai beprotiška. Dabartinės kūrybingumo tendencijos renkasi tobulumą vietoj turinio, tačiau aš ruošiuosi tai užginčyti. Tikras grožis yra netobulas, tikras grožis – tai atsitiktinumai ir klaidos. Kartojimasis ir vienodumas yra be galo nuobodu. Tikras grožis negali būti išspaustas per prievartą ar nenatūralus, grožio šedevrai gimsta spontaniškai, drąsiai, ir padedant instinktams. Dar niekada nebuvo nei užbrėžtų kūrybos būdų nei tikslų, tačiau nepaisant to, mes apsupti daugybės pasikartojančių dalykų – tas pats mėšlas tik kitos spalvos vėl, ir vėl, ir vėl. Panašu, kad primiršome, koks skirtumas yra tarp imitavimo ir įkvėpimo. Žinoma, tokia žmogaus prigimtis – susilieti su banda, juk ten saugiau. Tačiau, kai kuriame tam, kad susilietume, rezultatai yra smarkiai vidutiniški ir tuoj pat užmiršti. Dar niekam nepavyko sukurti proveržio laikantis taisyklių. Diskutuosiu apie tai, kad blogai yra gerai, simetrija yra pervertinama, o gėdos jausmas yra tiesiausias kelias į kūrybinį nušvitimą.”
